Picking apart Fitzpatrick's picks vs. Giants

Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was very hard on himself Sunday after Buffalo’s 27-24 loss to the New York Giants.

The usually safe thrower made two rather critical mistakes, throwing two interceptions to Giants cornerback Corey Webster when trying to connect with Stevie Johnson on go routes.

Johnson had Webster beat on the first pick, but Fitzpatrick underthrew the ball. At first look, it seemed like Fitz probably shouldn’t have thrown it with safety Deon Grant flying over to help in coverage. However, Johnson had a step on both defenders, and the worst case could have been that Fitzpatrick overthrows him.

The second interception was another underthrow and was at a more critical point in the game, tied 24-24 late in the fourth quarter. The second pick may have been a worse throw, because there wasn’t any over-the-top safety help in the direct vicinity, so an overthrow would not have been dangerous.

“To throw to my go-to guy, the guy I’ve hit on the same exact route 100 times and to not do it twice, that’s just hard for me,” Fitzpatrick told the Buffalo media after the game.

In all fairness, even two good throws probably would have been well-defended. Webster said after the game that the defense knew what was coming because the Bills had ran the same play a handful of times already, not to mention Fitzpatrick’s eyes never left Johnson on the second interception.
