Dolphins' O-line vs. Bills' rush not marquee matchup

BY DAN BEGNOCHE

On paper, the matchup between the Buffalo Bills' pass rush and the Miami Dolphins' pass protection looks like a wash. And that's no compliment to either squad.

Miami's offensive line hasn't stopped much this season, with last week's nine-sack performance by the Philadelphia Eagles telling of the group's effectiveness. The Dolphins have given up the second-most sacks in the league to date and fourth-most hits on their quarterbacks.

The Dolphins' signal-caller position is likely to be filled by J.P. Losman this weekend, as Matt Moore is recovering from a mild concussion he suffered in last week's loss. If Losman does start, having a rusty quaterback behind center would be mouth-watering for most defenses. But for the injury-plagued Bills' pass rush, it's a little more complicated.

“We obviously look at their pressures and the sacks they’ve given up, but at the end of the day we have to do the same,” linebacker Chris Kelsay told reporters this week. “Obviously we haven’t been able to do that the last several games. There are times that we’re around the quarterback, we’ll have him brought to the ground and it’s tough because if you make a team one-dimensional it helps your defense tremendously.”

Buffalo's defense is dead last in the league in sacks, and in Miami's 35-8 rout of the Bills in Week 11, Buffalo mustered only one sack on Moore, while Moore had a 70 percent completion rate and threw for three touchdowns.

The loss of nose tackle Kyle Williams early in November added to the long list of veteran players the Bills have placed on Injured Reserve, which has compounded their pass-rush woes.

“We’re hoping to get pressure on the quarterback but pass coverage and pass pressure goes hand in hand,” safety George Wilson said this week. “The front has to do their job, and us on the backend have to do our job of covering those guys up to give our front more time to get there as well as the front getting to the quarterback so we don’t have to cover all day.”
