Dolphins' solid tackler Davis finally reaches QB

By Nick St. Denis

Vontae Davis has blitzed before but never made it to the quarterback in time. He made it Sunday.

Davis had four tackles, including a sack on Carson Palmer, in the Dolphins' 34-14 victory over the Oakland Raiders.

"Vontae (Davis) is a good tackler, so I mean to get him involved in some of these pressures," Dolphins coach Tony Sparano told the media Monday. "And we had him involve in pressure before and he’s been close. Coming from where he has to come from to make a sack there has to be a lot of people doing something right."

Davis is one of the team's best players in coverage, but Miami had confidence in its secondary to hold up while Davis took his shot in the offensive backfield, and it paid off.

"The other people in the back end have to be doing their end of the deal there if you’re turning Vontae loose off of the corner," Sparano said. "But when Vontae comes now he’s going to come and tackle you because he’s a good tackler. So I was happy obviously to see him get the sack, get the minus play."

In eight games (all starts) this season, Davis has recorded 32 tackles, two interceptions and five passes defensed to go along with the quarterback takedown.
