Ex-Jet Jenkins defends McElroy, talks some Sanchez

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Former Jets defensive tackle Kris Jenkins hasn't been shy about giving his opinion on the state of his former team this season, and he kept it up Thursday.

After learning of third-string quarterback Greg McElroy's comments Wednesday, Jenkins hit up the social media-sphere with his take.

"Damn I didn't know McElroy had that type of dawg in him," Jenkins wrote, via Facebook and Twitter. "Make your case man and when you get the opportunity you better make the most of it. That is if the egos don't get sensitive and do away with you. Jets fans better blog so Tannenbaum knows how much you want to see this kid get a shot!!!!"

In elaborating on his thoughts while talking to Mike Lupica on ESPN New York Thursday, Jenkins steered the conversation two strings in front of McElroy, where Mark Sanchez calls signals as the leader of the Jets' offense.

“The No. 1 quarterback should have said that a long time ago,” Jenkins told Lupica. “It would have been all part of the process of him growing a pair and standing up and being a man.

"But the thing is, he lost his because he got caught up in the wash that is New York, in the spotlight, taking pictures in the magazines and doing all of that stuff. So, that’s just what everybody has seen with Mark Sanchez, and they got tired of it.”

As for McElroy: "That's a grown man, I like it."

Jenkins continued with Sanchez.

“I think Mark wants to be a leader, but there’s a difference between wanting it and taking it,” he said. "... I still feel like Sanchez can be an elite quarterback. But, Sanchez has to believe that."
