Patriots get first downs on nearly half of passes

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The Patriots' passing attack was the most efficient chain-mover in the NFL in 2011.

Quarterback Tom Brady and the Patriots' offense moved the chains on 42.8 percent of their passing attempts.

New England also had the most pass completions for 20 yards or more (72), mainly due to the catch-and-run abilities of receiver Wes Welker and tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Gronkowski, who set a handful of tight end records in 2011, averaged 14.7 yards a reception and had 17 touchdowns. Welker picked up 12.9 yards a clip and had a 99-yard touchdown reception in Week 1.

Eight of the Patriots' 12 players who caught passes from Brady in 2011 averaged double-digits in yards per catch.
