Gronk on playing in Super Bowl: 'I make the final call'

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Rob Gronkowski has a very popular ankle. This week, it might be the most popular ankle in the world.

The Patriots tight end's absence from the field extended to its 10th day Wednesday, as Gronkowski is still nursing an ankle injury he acquired in the AFC Championship Game two Sundays ago. Gronkowski, however, practiced Thursday, albeit limited.

While he appears to be a game-time decision, the only person making the decision will be Gronkowski himself.

"I will make the final call," Gronkowski told the Super Bowl media Thursday. "I listen to the trainer's advice, but it's how I feel. I'm just trying to get better. The trainer has helped me get to a place where I need to be.

"... That is my decision. I know how much pain I can tolerate."

With the enormity of the game, it's hard to imagine Gronkowski won't at least shoot up with some painkillers and give it a try.

"It's the Super Bowl. I'm doing everything I can possibly do to be out there," he said. "I want to be out there no matter what. I want to help out the team. I am doing everything possible to be out there, and we'll just see on Sunday. I will try to go as much as possible."
