Step One of “Operation Aging Wideouts” has apparently begun, as the Patriots have reportedly “approached Chad Ochocinco about restructuring his contract.”

According to Liz Mullen of the Sports Business Journal via Twitter, the two sides have discussed a pay-cut for the 2012 season, which is no surprise here. Ocho was statistically the worst wideout of the top three on the New England depth chart, snagging a dreadfully-low 15 receptions last season and one touchdown. And at 34, well, he's not getting any younger.

Ochocinco is slated to receive $3 million in 2012 and '13, a number the Pats would love to knock down and use elsewhere.

Ochocinco could still be released before the beginning of the season, though the Patriots would take a $3.17 million cap hit, according to Greg Bedard of Boston.com.

“He's under contract," Patriots' director of player personnel Nick Caserio told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine. "So, if he's under contract, he'll be here.”

Whatever that means.
