With fresh start in Miami, Bush shedding 'bust' label

BY SEAN DONOVAN

Expectations were high for Reggie Bush coming out of Southern California. The Saints drafted him No. 2 overall in 2006, and after five average seasons, he was labeled a bust by most.

Last offseason, the Dolphins traded backup safety Jonathon Amaya and a sixth round draft pick to the Saints for Bush and their sixth round pick. Bush went on to have a breakout season, rushing for 1,000 yards for the first time in his career and catching passes for almost 300 more, along with seven touchdowns.

Not a bad pickup, especially considering the fact that Miami was the only team pursuing Bush. General manager Jeff Ireland might have found a primary running back for years to come, and for a small price.

"He’s what we thought we would be," Ireland told the Miami Herald. "I thought he had a good year – I’m excited to have him back on the team."

The encouraging thing for the Dolphins is that Bush may be poised to have an even better year in 2012.

New head coach Joe Philbin is bringing a west coast offense to Miami, where Bush could be used heavily in the short passing game as well as have larger running lanes, where his speed and agility could bring big plays throughout the season.

It's also worth noting that Reggie is happy with life in South Florida and has become a locker room leader for a team that has lacked player leadership in the past few seasons.
