Quick take on AFC East's 2013 Pro Bowl selections

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The AFC East boasted 10 Pro Bowlers this year, as announced by the NFL Wednesday night. Here's the breakdown:

Patriots (7): QB Tom Brady, TE Rob Gronkowski, G Logan Mankins, LB Jerod Mayo, ST Matthew Slater, WR Wes Welker, DT Vince Wilfork.

Jets (2): S LaRon Landry, CB Antonio Cromartie.

Dolphins (1): DE Cameron Wake.

Bills (0): None. (photo: Jose Louis Garza, Flickr)

WHY?: There were at least half a dozen AFC guards who were better than Mankins, but a name is a name. Landry was good this season, but not Pro Bowl good. See below.

WHY NOT?: Jets guard Brandon Moore deserved to get in over Mankins, and Bills safety Jairus Byrd should've easily taken Landry's spot. Oh, and there's this dude named C.J. Spiller. But that one can be blamed on Bills coach Chan Gailey.

GOOD CALL: Assuming Darrelle Revis's role, Cromartie was pretty much the best cover cornerback in the AFC this season. Also, Wake is legit.

BAD CALL: Dolphins center Mike Pouncey was arguably the biggest snub of them all. And the fact that his brother Maurkice, who wasn't as good as Mike, got in, was just insult to injury. Lastly, but not leastly (?), Jets defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson should've been a shoe-in, except it's a popularity contest, and he's not a household name... yet.
