Patriots' project Jeff Demps returning to track

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Jeff Demps likes football. He seems to like track more.

Demps, the former Florida Gators tailback and Olympic track runner, was signed by the New England Patriots last summer to a three-year contract. He still wants to honor that deal, but he'd like to honor his main talent, as well. (photo: photo-gator, Flickr)

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Tuesday that Demps told the Patriots he plans on competing on the track again, starting in March.

While the decision raises speculation on whether Demps, who has already received the guaranteed portion of his salary, will again don a Pats uniform, Demps doesn't see why he can't do both.

"Jeff has no intention of leaving football," Demps's agent Daniel Rose said. "He just loves track and wants to do both."

Bill Belichick runs a pretty tight ship, so it's hard to imagine he'd be totally cool with a guy not fully committed to football. But nothing surprises us with the Patriots.
