The team completely revamped its linebacking corps on the first day of free agency, and its veterans saw the worst of it.
According to Jim Trotter of Sports Illustrated, 30-year-old Kevin Burnett is the latest victim, cut by team shortly after the signing of Oakland’s Phillip Wheeler. (photo: Matt Britt, Flickr)
Burnett was a free-agent pickup in 2011 via the San Diego Chargers. According to Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post, the flip-flop of Burnett and Wheeler actually saved the team money against the salary cap this season.
That, combined with Wheeler’s age and Burnett’s impending cost next season toward the cap, should be enough to make general manager Jeff Ireland confident in his choice.
Also along the defensive front Tuesday, the team released veteran linebacker Karlos Dansby, a move that came not long after the announcement that Miami had agreed to terms with Dannell Ellerbe of the Ravens.
