Bills DE Mario Williams nursing a sore foot

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Mario Williams didn't participate in team drills Sunday evening during the Buffalo Bills' first training camp practice. Coach Doug Marrone later revealed why.

"Mario reported to our athletic training staff that he had a sore foot," Marrone told reporters after practice, according to Tim Graham of The Buffalo News. "So what we wanted to do was hold him out of practice and let our medical staff evaluate him."

Williams didn't elaborate on the injury.

"Mario's put in a lot of hard work, went in the playbook and did a lot of work this offseason," Marrone said. "So I always have initially a disappointment for the player because we tend to forget how much work they put in and you have a player that definitely wants to be out here."

The veteran defensive end, who signed the richest contract for a defender in NFL history last summer, had surgery on his wrist during the team's by week last year and improved his output as a result.

New coordinator Mike Pettine is installing his aggressive hybrid defensive system and obviously wants the team's best pass-rusher involved. We'll find out in the coming days if Williams' injury is something to be concerned about or if it's just a minor setback.
