Holmes can't say for sure he'll play at all in '12

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The foot injury that ended Santonio Holmes's 2012 season prematurely was of the worst kind -- a Grade 4 Lisfranc. The injury, which he suffered Week 4, has kept him away from any kind of football activity since.

"I can't answer that," Holmes said Friday when asked if he's sure he'll play this season, via Brian Costello of the NY Post.

Just last month, Holmes was eying the beginning of training camp for a return to the field, but now it seems he'll just be happy to get into a game. He's currently on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Jets coach Rex Ryan said "there's always concern" regarding Holmes's return but that he's "confident" the veteran wideout will be back.

The Jets signed Holmes's co-starter from two seasons ago in Braylon Edwards earlier this week, a move many had been anticipating. Edwards is close to an automatic starter on the perimeter, especially if Holmes can't make it back.

The second-year Stephen Hill and third-year Jeremy Kerley round out the notable part of Gang Green's very thin receiver corps.
