Milliner, however, started 11 of 13 games as a newbie, which likely gave him plenty of reps going against McElroy in practice. After being selected by the New York Jets in the first round of this year's draft, the cornerback will have another opportunity to face off with McElroy, who was taken by Gang Green in the seventh round in 2011.
“I’ve been messing with Greg, telling him I’m going to pick off a couple of passes from him in training camp,” Milliner recently told the Times Daily in Northwest Alabama.
McElroy is the definite third-stringer on a depth chart that has incumbent Mark Sanchez and second-round rookie Geno Smith battling for the starting job. So, for the Jets' sake, hopefully Milliner isn't working against McElroy too often in practice.
And we figure he'll get plenty of chances to intercept Sanchez.
New York drafted Milliner at No. 9 overall to work opposite Antonio Cromartie, where All-World corner Darrelle Revis used to be employed. By default, he'll own the gig over returner Kyle Wilson, a former first-rounder who has been underwhelming the last couple seasons.
Milliner hasn't stepped foot on the turf yet since joining the Jets at the end of April, as he's recovering from shoulder surgery that was expected to have him away from the field until training camp. Regardless, he's looking to McElroy to help him get up to speed.
“. . . it’s great to have a familiar face in the organization and to be able to talk to him," Milliner said. "I know he will help me out.”
