Blount puts Bolden on Patriots' roster bubble

BY NICK ST. DENIS

LeGarrette Blount rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries last week against the Philadelphia Eagles in the New England Patriots' first preseason game. Brandon Bolden, meanwhile, was responsible for extending an Eagles drive with a running-into-the-kicker penalty and 14 yards on four attempts.

With that, Bolden is now squarely on the Patriots' roster bubble.

“You’d have to ask Bill (Belichick),” Bolden told CSNNE's Tom Curran Thursday. “I just go out there and do what they ask me to do.”

Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen are the clear-cut 1a and 1b options on New England's depth chart, and former New York Jet Leon Washington's kick and punt return acumen, along with his Danny Woodhead-like fit in the backfield, make him a likely candidate for the final roster.

That leaves Bolden and Blount, a bruising back who was brought in this offseason from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to fill out the Patriots' power running game. Early in the exhibition season, Blount looks like the leader in the clubhouse.

Blount's first touchdown was a multi-change of direction 51-yard scamper, and his second one a 1-yard dive over the goalline.

“I don’t think there’s any question about his skills,’’ Belichick said Tuesday of Blount. “They’re pretty evident and they have been throughout the course of his career. . . He’s had a good spring for us and a good training camp for us. I think he helps us.’’

The Patriots return to preseason action Friday night against the Bucs.
