Jets hit Manuel on one of every three dropbacks

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The Buffalo Bills went into their AFC East bout with the New York Jets as the on-paper favorite in the pass rush.

The Jets left the contest as the uncontested pass rush superiors.

Gang Green sacked Bills quarterback E.J. Manuel eight times, while the Bills failed to take down Jets signal-caller Geno Smith once.

According to ESPN's stats, Manuel was hit 16 times in the game. He was sacked eight times and attempted 42 passes, so the Jets' defenders made contact with the rookie nearly once every three plays.

Manuel didn't throw an interception and did have a second-half touchdown pass, though he completed just 19 of his 42 passing attempts.

"When they are bringing eight people at you it is definitely tough but as you said throughout the game, you still have to relax. That is the biggest thing," Manuel said after the game. "You don’t want to hurry anything unnecessary and that is when you throw errant passes and things like that.

"It is a tough situation to handle but I think moving forward we will be more prepared for it."

Muhammad Wilkerson sacked Manuel twice, while Calvin Pace, David Harris, Demario Davis, Dawan Landry, Sheldon Richardson and Antonio Allen added a quarterback takedown apiece.

Add it all up, and that's two defensive linemen, three linebackers and two safeties. The Jets were all-in on getting to Manuel, and it paid off.
