Groin injury may explain Sturgis' recent struggles

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Miami Dolphins kicker Caleb Sturgis has struggled to split the uprights as of late, and this week, Sturgis is struggling to stay on the practice field.

Sturgis, who has missed five of his last eight field goal attempts, was limited in practice Thursday with a groin ailment, according to The Sun-Sentinel.

The fifth-round pick out of Florida missed a chunk of training camp with an injury of the same variety, so it's possible the groin has been aggravated to some degree for a portion of the season.

Sturgis connected on his first 10 field goals of his professional career and has made three boots of 50 yards or longer.

If his groin is in fact a legitimate concern heading into the weekend, the Dolphins will have an extra day to assess the situation, as they don't return to game action until Monday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Coach Joe Philbin said Thursday that the team will be off Friday.
