Marrone tries to explain Blount's gouging returns

BY NICK ST. DENIS

LeGarrette Blount ran all over the Buffalo Bills Sunday, and not just on offense.

The New England Patriots' bruising tailback returned two long kickoffs, amassing 145 yards with a long of 83 in that department, in the Patriots' win.

"Well, you know, the [missed] tackles is what happened," Bills coach Doug Marrone said after the game, via BuffaloBills.com. "I think when you put the film on, you know, you’ll see going down [the field] there.

"One time, on one of them, we got collapsed; we missed a tackle in the hole. There were a couple problems on that one. You know, obviously, you get knocked out of your lane. The second one, there were three missed tackles. You know, they were in position to make it and you have to make that play. And we weren’t able to make it."

Blount, as Patriots coach Bill Belichick said, "put the team on his back" elsewhere, too. He gained a whopping 189 yards on 24 rushes, including touchdown runs of 36 and 35 yards.

"Their kid had an outstanding game, you know, running the football and kickoff returns," Marrone said. "He had, not even sure, probably 300 yards of offense. My hats off to him, that’s difficult to do in this league."
