The New York Jets didn't want to go into the 2014 season with a lame duck head coach. 2015? They'll cross that bridge when they get there.
Rex Ryan recently signed a contract extension with the Jets, as reported by multiple media outlets and confirmed by the team Thursday.
Ryan was under contract for 2014, and the extension is reportedly of the "multi-year" variety. However, according to Brian Costello of the NY Post, Ryan's salary is only guaranteed through 2015.
That means if the organization changes its mind after next season, it could fire Ryan and only be required to pay him for the ensuing season and nothing more.
The details on the length of the contract have yet to be disclosed, but guaranteed money and options hold the most weight in getting a true gauge of its extent.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the deal is laden with incentives based on playoff wins. So in essence, the Jets made a low-risk decision (from a timeline standpoint) while Ryan showed enough confidence in himself to not be worried about short-term struggles.
