Jets' Walls vows to be more physical moving forward

BY NICK ST. DENIS

New York Jets cornerback Darrin Walls expects to be in the running for a starting job on Gang Green's defensive depth chart.

To do so, he'll need to up his physicality -- something the departed Antonio Cromartie, a mentor of sorts for Walls last year, advised him to do.
"The crazy thing is I think I’ve always been hearing that piece of advice for years now," Walls said last week, via NewYorkJets.com. "Coming out of Notre Dame, that was probably the biggest thing that a lot of people wanted to see me do is be more physical, be more aggressive.

"My trainer’s been pushing me hard mentally to be able to be that physical player."

Walls will be jockeying with Kyle Wilson, Ras-I Dowling and Ellis Lankster for playing time across from (or beside) Dee Milliner. The Jets also recently brought in undrafted free agent Jeremy Reeves and could target the position somewhere in the middle of the draft, in which the Jets have 12 picks.

"My whole goal as a rookie was to come in and eventually be a starter in the NFL," the fourth-year undrafted defensive back said, "and I think with the Jets bringing me back, they’re going to give me an opportunity to do that."
