Pats bring in competition for incumbent long snapper

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The New England Patriots re-signed their three-year long snapper in Danny Aiken earlier this month.

Aiken's job, however, apparently isn't totally safe.

Wednesday, the Patriots announced they signed long snapper Charley Hughlett, an undrafted free agent out of Central Florida in 2012 who has yet to play a regular season down in the NFL.

The 6-foot-4, 251-pounder most recently spent a pair of short stints on the Dallas Cowboys' roster the past two years. Hughlett, 23, appeared in every game at UCF.

Aiken is the leader in clubhouse for the gig, having played in every Patriots game the last three seasons while snapping for field goals, extra points and punts. He signed a one-year deal as the incumbent.
