Vick offers Geno both competition and 'helping hand'

Everything seemed to be falling in line for a Michael Vick-New York Jets marriage prior to the parties' meeting Friday.

It was during said meeting when they officially signed the papers.

Gang Green announced their acquisition of the veteran signal-caller Friday, and in a corresponding move, released quarterback Mark Sanchez. Ensuing reports had Vick's new contract as a one-year, $5 million agreement.

With that, the Jets' incumbent starter, youngster Geno Smith, has a little work to do if he wants to keep his starting job. Vick plans to show Smith the ropes, but in the meantime, try to unseat him in the short term.

"I know what I came to New York to do," Vick said, via NJ.com. "First and foremost, I came to compete and be a helping hand for Geno. I know he has a long way to go. But we both talked and we both agreed that we’re going to push one another and make each other better.

"Whatever happens, happens."

The soon-to-be 34-year-old Vick will be reunited with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, who coached the Philadelphia Eagles' offense for part of Vick's stint with his former team. Vick lost his starting job to Nick Foles last year due to injury but put together a mostly-exceptional tenure in Philly.
