Marrone not ready to give up on troublemaker Dareus

BY DAN BEGNOCHE

Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Marcell Dareus told reporters last week that he "wasn't a trouble guy" following a felony arrest that started after being pulled over for speeding in Alabama a month ago.

Apparently his definition of trouble is different than ours.

Two days after making those comments, Dareus was involved in another speeding-related incident -- this time crashing his car into a tree during an apparent drag race in Hamburg, according to the Buffalo News. He was charged Friday with three misdemeanors and other traffic violations and appeared in court Monday for those charges; he was released on his own recognizance.

Coach Doug Marrone wasn't ready to throw Dareus to the wolves just yet when asked about the incident(s) Tuesday, saying via Chris Brown of buffalobills.com that although the 24-year-old will skip the rest of OTAs, he wants to get him back on the straight and narrow and expects him to be present for mandatory workouts.

"I spoke with him at length and we spent a lot of time together talking about a lot of things," Marrone said. "As of now, he’s not going to be attending the OTAs, but he’ll be attending the mandatory minicamp when we come back.

"I just want to make sure that I’m clear that everyone understands that I believe in Marcell and I will do everything I can to make sure that we can get him on the right track. Really that’s the situation."

What's worse, Marrone may have two culprits on his hands, as police are currently investigating whether fellow Bill Jerry Hughes was the second driver in the alleged drag race. Marrone said he could not speak to that allegation because of the ongoing investigation, while Hughes said he "can't elaborate on that."

No court date has yet to be scheduled for the two felony charges pending from the incident in May, and it's unclear whether there will be any blow back from the league on either event. Dareus had his most productive year with Buffalo in 2013, notching 7.5 sacks and 71 combined tackles.
