Jets go defensive, grab USC's Williams with first pick

Quarterbacks, it's officially time to be worried about of the New York Jets' defensive line.

With rumors that defensive end Mo Wilkerson could be on the trading block in the upcoming weeks, Gang Green snatched up top defensive prospect Leonard Williams with the sixth overall pick in the first night of the NFL Draft Thursday.

A three-year starter, Williams tallied 21 sacks and 36.5 tackles for a loss with USC, as well as five forced fumbles and two interceptions. He'll join a dominant line crew that includes Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardon and David Harrison.

"He was the best player available on our board and we were surprised he fell to us," General Manager Mike Maccagnan said following the selection. "He was too good of a value to pass on."

Williams becomes the seventh straight defensive player taken in the first round by the Jets, and the third defensive lineman since 2011. The last first-round, offensive selection by New York was Mark Sanchez in 2009.
