Jets sign a couple tryouts, including a quarterback

The New York Jets signed a pair of tryout players from their rookie minicamp.

Gang Green added its fifth quarterback to the roster, inking signal-caller Jake Heaps and fullback J.C. Copeland. The team released undrafted free agents cornerback Greg Henderson and safety Demarkus Perkins in the process.

The 6-1, 208-pound Heaps played two seasons at BYU before transferring to Kansas for a year. Then he transferred to Miami and took a handful of snaps but never started.

Heaps joins incumbent Geno Smith, journeyman veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, career reserve Matt Simms and fourth-round rookie Bryce Petty on the depth chart.

The 5-11, 260-pound Copeland spent part of the summer last year with the Dallas Cowboys. He logged four seasons with LSU--starting the last three and rushing for seven touchdowns in the process. Copland came to LSU as a defensive lineman but transitioned to the other side of the ball early in his collegiate career.

He joins third-year fullback Tommy Bohanon on the depth chart.
