Spikes released following early-morning car incident

It may be unclear what exactly happened in Brandon Spikes' car early Sunday morning, but the outcome Monday was swift and decisive.

Following reports that the linebacker's car was found abandoned in the middle of a state highway in Foxboro around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, the New England Patriots handed the 27-year-old his outright release, according to WEEI.com. The former Gator had just rejoined the team on a one-year deal after a one-year hiatus with the Buffalo Bills.

State Police in Massachusetts are currently investigating the incident with Spikes' 2011 Mercedes, which may also be tied to a hit-and-run that allegedly occurred on the same road around that time.
