Dolphins falter on third down in loss to Jets

Third down was not a good down for the Miami Dolphins Sunday. Then again, not much went well for them Sunday.

The Dolphins failed to convert on their first eight third down attempts against the New York Jets in a 38-20 loss that wasn't as close as the score indicated.

Miami finished four-for-15 (26 percent) on third down and gained much of its offensive production in garbage time after the game was decided.

The trend continued from the teams' last meeting, when the Jets held the Dolphins to an 0-for-12 mark on third down and 0-for-4 on fourth down.

In the latest bout, the Jets converted on 10 of 17 third down attempts on offense, starting slow but finishing strong through the better part of the last two and a half quarters.

Gang Green advanced to 6-5 with the win, while the Dolphins fell to 4-7.
