Jets drop Ellis Lankster for second time this month

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Cornerback Ellis Lankster's return to the New York Jets didn't last long, though it may not be the end.

The special teams specialist was released Tuesday for the second time this month, as announced by the team.

The Jets also announced they signed cornerback Brandon Smith, though they later clarified that the Smith signing was a practice squad move, meaning the team still has a spot open on the 53-man roster.

Jets bolster depth at cornerback with three signings

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The New York Jets traded away their best cornerback last year in Darrelle Revis before taking Dee Milliner in the first round of the draft.

This month, they're likely to let go of their now-No. 1 cornerback in Antonio Cromartie and could be looking for another bonafide starter to work opposite a hopefully-improved Milliner, assuming Cromartie doesn't re-up with the team.

But first, New York needed to bolster the middle and back part of its depth chart at the position, and the team did just that Wednesday.
