The New England Patriots announced Sunday they released on-again, off-again reserve wide receiver Greg Orton.

In corresponding moves, the Patriots signed second-year wideout Brian Tyms and rookie receiver Cole Stanford.

The 28-year-old Orton was originally signed to the Patriots' practice squad at the end of December, released by the team on May 22 and re-signed on July 23. The 6-foot-3, 199-pounder has spent time on the Denver Broncos and Cincinatti Bengals rosters but hasn't seen the NFL game field.

Patriots swap out a couple of reserve receivers

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The New England Patriots announced Wednesday the re-signing wide receiver Greg Orton, releasing rookie wideout Tyler McDonald in the process.

Orton, 28, was originally signed to the Patriots' practice squad at the end of December and released in May. The 6-foot-3, 199-pounder spent part of 2011 and all of 2012 on the Denver practice squad and went to training camp with Denver in 2013.

After entering the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Cincinnati Bengals out of Purdue in 2009, Orton had stints with the Arena Football League’s Spokane Shock and the United Football League’s Omaha Knights.
