The Michael Egnew experiment is over.
A little more than two years after taking the former Missouri Tiger in the third round of the draft, the Miami Dolphins cut ties with the underachieving tight end Friday.
Egnew caught just seven passes for 69 yards last year and played in just two games as a rookie.

Dustin Keller, who never played a regular season down for the Dolphins due to injury, isn't coming back, and Michael Egnew, a guy the team had high hopes for a couple years ago, hasn't materialized.
But Miami didn't target the position in free agency and instead opted to roll with a young squad, which includes fifth-rounder Arthur Lynch.

Belichick says Clay is 'more than just a receiver'

Miami Dolphins tight end Charles Clay has established himself as a very real factor in the passing game.
Clay has a touchdown reception in his last three contests and is averaging 12.7 yards a reception on 24 catches, including longs of 67 and 45 yards in two different games. But the New England Patriots, who host the Dolphins Sunday, aren't just preparing to defend his pass-catching work.
"He’s had long plays, he’s very capable with the ball in his hands," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Wednesday, via Patriots.com. "I think he’s very competitive as a blocker too."

Keller trying to accelerate young TEs' learning

Dustin Keller has one year to prove his worth with the Miami Dolphins. He's trying to earn it both in and out of action.
The former New York Jets tight end, who opted for a single-season deal with the Dolphins to up his stock, has taken the field alongside maligned returner Michael Egnew and rookie Dion Sims, who are battling for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart.
While Keller is honing his own craft, he's trying to help along the youngsters.

Egnew still trending away from a roster spot

Tight end Michael Egnew hasn't been in good graces with the Miami Dolphins' depth chart since entering the NFL as the team's third round pick in 2012.
Not much has changed.
According to Armando Salguero of The Miami Herald, Egnew was taking reps with the third- and fourth-team offenses over the weekend as the Dolphins began training camp. Salguero reported returner Charles Clay and rookie Dion Sims worked behind veteran Dustin Keller.

Egnew clearly trying to shake 'soft' perception

A teammate of Michael Egnew called the young Miami Dolphins tight end a "p---y" and "not a football player" earlier this year, with another coworker saying "he should have been cut."
That, just months after being publicly ripped by his offensive coordinator on HBO's Hard Knocks. So Egnew is trying to toughen up.
According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins' 2012 third-rounder is now spending three days a week doing mixed martial arts training.

Dolphins add local defensive end, receiving TE in 3rd

With the first of their two third-round choices in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Dolphins took defensive end Olivier Vernon from the University of Miami at No. 72 overall.
The Dolphins hope that Vernon can develop into a pass rusher than can complement star linebacker Cameron Wake. At 6-foot-2, 260 pounds, Vernon is an athletic, physical end who didn't produce to his expected potential as a Hurricane, partly due to an improper benefits suspension that took the first six games of his 2011 season.
Vernon is the first Miami player selected by the Dolphins since offensive tackle Vernon Carey in 2004.
