Familiarity to expedite Jackson's role in Pats' offense

After two practices with the New England Patriots last week, running back Steven Jackson was eased into the lineup last Sunday with nine snaps in a loss to the New York Jets.

He carried the ball just seven times, though that workload is expected to be increased moving forward as the Patriots charge their way into the postseason.

Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels thinks the "comfort level" between Jackson and New England's staff will expedite the process of getting Jackson up to speed. The veteran tailback played under McDaniels in 2011 with the St. Louis Rams.

"I have a comfort level with him. I think our offensive staff, we kind of know him better than anybody that comes off the street that we’ve never really been exposed to," McDaniels said, via ESPN Boston. "Secondly, he’s certainly had exposure to the terminology and the verbiage that we use here so I think that that helps him to close the gap in terms of what he knows and what he doesn’t know.

"He’s well ahead of somebody that would come in here with zero experience in our system, and I think that would definitely help any new player that would come in at this point in time in the year."

New England takes on the Miami Dolphins in Week 17.

McDaniels looking to expand Steven Jackson's role

Steven Jackson's prep time prior to last Sunday's game against the New York Jets was evident in the amount of snaps he received.

While the entire offense only attempted 22 carries for 63 yards, a slight drop from previous weeks, Jackson saw only seven touches.

With more practice time this week prior to their division game against the Dolphins, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is hoping to increase Jackson's participation.

"Steven had really two days of practice last week so I think that it’s fair to say that we wanted to put him in a situation that was fair to him based on the preparation and the work that he had done prior to the game," McDaniels said via ESPN.com.

"This week will give us another three days of good work and experience and exposure to him, and for him to the offense, that will give us an opportunity to expand his role, hopefully during the course of the game on Sunday."

Steven Jackson announces his Pats signing: 'I'm back'

The New England Patriots have not officially announced their intentions with veteran running back Steven Jackson.

No worries -- he did it for them.

Monday, after more than three months of radio silence from Twitter, Jackson returned with two words:
Further, the 32-year-old updated his profile information to state: "New England Patriots running back."

The Pats went with three backs in their eventual win against the Tennessee Titans Sunday, gaining 93 yards on 26 total attempts. Brandon Bolden and rookie Joey Iosefa each averaged 3.6 yards per carry, and the crew was held without a touchdown.

With similar running styles, Jackson, who is reportedly inking a one-year deal, is expected to fill LeGarrette Blount's role, who was IR'ed by the team earlier this month.

Fisher: Dolphins' run defense is No. 1 for a reason

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The Miami Dolphins are holding opposing running backs to just 2.7 yards a carry, the lowest mark in the league and half a yard better than the Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Sunday, Miami's tough defensive front will be up against the only team the NFL that has yet to score a rushing touchdown this season in the St. Louis Rams.

Needless to say, "... it's going to be a challenge for us to run the football," Rams coach Jeff Fisher said of his Steven Jackson-led running corps.

“Just what they’ve done to some really good running games here early in the season," Fisher told the Miami media this week, according to the Dolphins' website. "How well they played not only against Houston, but what they’re doing average per carry, it’s clear that they’re number one in the league for a reason in rushing yards per game, because they tackle very well and they’re very stout up front and they understand run schemes and they attack them."
