Kelly, Smith, Anderson depart from Patriots' D-front

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The New England Patriots are looking to get younger and cheaper on the defensive front.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday the team is set to release defensive linemen Tommy Kelly and Will Smith, as well as linebacker James Anderson.

The 10-year veteran Kelly played in five games last season with the Patriots before sustaining a season-ending torn ACL.

Patriots' Kelly 'knocking the rust off,' feels fine

BY DAN BEGNOCHE

The New England Patriots were really excited about their defensive pairing up the middle heading into last season.

Present as always would be defensive tackle Vince Wilfork, who hadn't missed a game since 2009 and was coming off a season where he had been selected to the Pro Bowl for the fourth consecutive year. Then there was fellow veteran Tommy Kelly, brought in to help Band-Aid the team's rushing defense and provide some stability of his own next to the reliable Wilfork.

What happened next was a crushing blow to the team's defensive core -- Wilfork ruptured his Achilles in Week 4, while Kelly tore his ACL one week later.

Like Wilfork, Kelly can draw double-teams

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Vince Wilfork might have a little more room to work with this year.

Wilfork, the anchor of the New England Patriots' defensive line, has been a regular subject of double-teams from opposing offensive linemen and blocking backs. With former Oakland Raiders lineman Tommy Kelly entering the fold, Wilfork thinks the Patriots' opponents may now have to pick their battles.

“You can’t single up on [us], especially with a guy like Tommy coming in -- his size, and the speed he plays with,” Wilfork told WEEI's Christopher Price. “The power that he plays with. His size in general. We’re both big guys, but he’s a lot taller than me. He’s longer than me. At the same time, he also brings some power."

Pats hire Vince Wilfork some help in Tommy Kelly

BY DAN BEGNOCHE

The pressure of the New England Patriots' defensive line to perform has been on the shoulders of defensive tackle Vince Wilfork for some time now.

That load may have become a bit lighter.

In a move the team hopes will bolster the interior defensive front, New England signed 10-year veteran and former Oakland Raider Tommy Kelly to a two-year deal Monday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. (photo: Jeffrey Beall, Flickr)
