For Gronkowski, success, failure all about the route

BY NICK ST. DENIS

As far as Rob Gronkowski is concerned, all it takes is a good route to be successful. On the other hand, a bad route can be just as impactful the other way.

The Patriot tight end burst on to the scene the last two seasons, reaching 20 receiving touchdowns (now has 27) faster than any other tight end in NFL history in becoming a critical part of quarterback Tom Brady's offense.

Gronkowski has it all figured out.

"It all depends on how I run my route," Gronkowski told the media Wednesday, Nov. 30. "I can always be covered if I run a bad route. If I'm not focusing on my details, then it's easy to get covered."

With a huge 6-foot-6, 265-pound frame and Brady throwing to him, it's probably tough for the two not to make a connection on nearly every attempt.

Gronkowski, however, is focused on doing everything the way he's supposed to.

"If I'm running a good route with focus on my details, focusing on what my coaches told me, and what our quarterback told me, then I feel like I can get open at any time," he said.

Gronkowski also has the luxury of working alongside the league's best slot receiver in Wes Welker.

"Just watching him get in and out of cuts, and how he breaks it down to get out of a cut faster," Gronkowski said of learning from Welker.
