Jets don't control playoff destiny but still have shot

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Like Rex Ryan's personality and capaciousness, the Jets' loss to the Giants Saturday was huge. Not only did Ryan's bravado backfire on him, but his team is now on the outside looking in.

Entering the game, the Jets had to win Saturday and next week against the Dolphins, and they were guaranteed a playoff spot. Now, the Jets need help.

The Jets need a win next week, and they need the Bengals, Titans and Raiders or Broncos to lose. It sounds like a tall order, but it's actually somewhat attainable.

The Bengals will be up against the Ravens, who are fighting for the No. 2 seed in the AFC. The Texans are locked into a playoff spot, but they're obviously better than the Titans, and the Raiders face the Chargers, which is a toss-up as of late. The Broncos face the Chiefs.

"A lot of things have to happen," Ryan told the media Saturday. "All I can say is we're going to compete to win. We're going to go down to Miami, they’re going to get our best shot and we’ll see if it is good enough and then we will see what happens, if we can make it or not. But clearly we lost control of our own destiny."
