Spiller not used in red zone, Bills struggle inside 20

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The Bills beat the Broncos Saturday thanks to a big day from the defense and special teams, but the offense still had its issues.

Buffalo was just 2-for-12 on third down and only converted on one of six red zone trips.

"It just was not a good situation for red zone (Saturday)," Bills coach Chan Gailey told the media. "We did a poor job of planning and getting it executed on my part."

Questions arose of Buffalo's use (or lack thereof) of now-No. 1 running back C.J. Spiller, who has been getting the bulk of the carries since Fred Jackson was injured. Spiller gained 111 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, yet he was taken out of the game whenever the team got into the red zone.

"First of all, he made about three long runs in a row a couple times and he was dead tired so we were trying to get Tashard (Choice) in there," Gailey said. "Then on the goal line we have Tashard. He’s a bigger, stronger back and that’s why we put him in there in the goal line packages. It wasn’t set up for it to be that way completely. It just worked out that way where he made three long runs and needed a blow and that’s when we were in the red zone."

Gailey conceded that he wouldn't use Spiller as a goal line back but said Spiller normally is included in the red zone offense.

"When the ball’s at the five-yard line we don’t take him out, that’s not the case," Gailey said. "It just so happened that way a few times (Saturday)."
