Jets owner sure Sanchez, Holmes will resolve issues

BY NICK ST. DENIS

A lot happened in 2011 for the Jets. Very little of it was good.

Among the many factors that contributed to the Jets' train wreck of a season was the soap opera surrounding receiver Santonio Holmes. Holmes was benched in the fourth quarter of the team's season-ending loss to the Eagles after several verbal altercations with teammates.

Reports later surfaced that Holmes and quarterback Mark Sanchez hadn't been, to put it lightly, on the same page throughout most of the year, and it showed on the field.

Holmes and Sanchez seemed to hit it off in 2010, and Holmes even defended Sanchez's play at the beginning of December, so whatever went sour between the two must have started some time after that.

The Jets are confident their perceived rocky relationship can be mended.

"They won a lot of games together and one is good for the other," Jets owner Woody Johnson told the media Thursday. "Santonio makes the quarterback a lot better and vice versa. So they have a good reason to iron this thing out and I think they can do it."

Holmes actually caught two more touchdowns in 2011 than 2010 and just one fewer reception, but Sanchez and Holmes didn't meet their expectations of a second-year tandem.

Johnson said Holmes would for sure be a Jet in 2012, adding that the veteran wideout "may be one of the best players we’ve ever had here."

Johnson also said he'll speak to both Sanchez and Holmes this offseason.
