'Phins offered Flynn half of what Seahawks proposed

BY SEAN DONOVAN

New details have surfaced about the Dolphins' failure to sign free agent quarterback Matt Flynn.

Dolphins sources told NFL.com's Jeff Darlington that Miami offered Flynn $4 million per year to sign with the Dolphins, which was about half of what the Seahawks offered.

Flynn signed with Seattle on March 18, which frustrated a fan base already disappointed by the fact that Peyton Manning chose to sign with the Broncos instead of Miami.

Embattled general manager Jeff Ireland has been blamed for failing to sign all of the free agents that the Miami fans have wanted signed. The public resentment toward Ireland culminated in a fan rally at the team facility on March 20.

It might simply be the case that head coach Joe Philbin, who was Flynn's offensive coordinator for four seasons, would not sign off on Flynn's potential to be the franchise quarterback. That fact would paint a different picture about Ireland than most fans are currently seeing.

Ireland said Flynn's opt to Seattle "was half his decision, half our decision." In his conversation with Darlington, he also defended his record on signing the free agents he targets. In regard to Manning's decision, Ireland said that he was "a small piece of that situation."

It was reported that Manning chose not to play in Miami mostly due to the lack of personal relationships he had within the Dolphins organization, hardly something that could be blamed on anyone in Miami's front office.
