Patriots sign veteran, oft-cut linebacker Carpenter

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The Patriots have almost exclusively been bolstering their passing attack since the start of free agency. Thursday, they tried something new.

New England announced it signed veteran linebacker Bobby Carpenter, a former first-rounder out of Ohio State.

As a Lion, Carpenter amassed 29 tackles last season and grabbed an interception, which he took to the house. Terms of Carpenter's deal were not disclosed.

"If you have a specific talent they’re going to find a way to utilize that, on either side of the ball, whatever it is," Carpenter said of the Patriots on Late Hits on Sirius XM Thursday, according to ESPN Boston. "That’s why you see so many guys playing and so many guys contributing in different ways.

"They do an excellent job of talent utilization and really try to find a way to get all 53 guys on the roster onto the field at some point in time so they can help the team win games."

The 28-year-old was drafted by the Cowboys in 2006 before spending time with the Dolphins (2010) and the Lions (2010-11). Carpenter was traded to the Rams during the 2010 offseason but was released and signed by Miami before the start of the season. The Dolphins cut Carpenter early in the 2010 season before the Lions acquired his services.

Carpenter has 89 career games and 10 starts under his belt, having recorded 165 tackles, an interception, 3.5 sacks, a fumble recovery and five passes defensed.
