Sanchez, Jets see 'comfort level' with Edwards

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Braylon Edwards was pretty good in 2010, and so was Mark Sanchez. The two have pretty much stunk since.

Edwards and Sanchez, who connected on 62 passes, eight touchdowns and more than 40 first downs in the New York Jets' 2010 campaign, were reunited this week after an odd sequence of events.

"We have a good chemistry together," Sanchez said Tuesday, via the Star-Ledger. "I’m confident throwing him the ball. I don’t think that will change." (photo: Zolotkey, Flickr)

Edwards has caught just 23 passes over the past two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks, but Sanchez, who is working with an injury-depleted receiving corps, will likely target Edwards early and often in the Jets' three-game season finale run.

The last time the pair joined forces for the first time with the season already underway -- in a Week 5 Monday night divisional contest in Miami -- they hooked up five times for 64 yards and a touchdown. Edwards gained instant respect from Sanchez after hauling in a circus catch down the left sideline. Sanchez targeted him nine times that game.

"It’s a good comfort level for [Sanchez]," Jets linebacker David Harris said. "... [Edwards] goes out and lays it on the line for his quarterback, diving for passes, jumping over guys. Even better as a run-blocker, which he doesn’t get credit for."

The Jets are desperate, and they can only hope Edwards is, too. To earn its third playoff berth in four years, New York has to win out against the Tennessee Titans, San Diego Chargers and Buffalo Bills and get some help in the meantime.
