Pats sign pair of rookie free agent defenders

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The New England Patriots were reportedly set to sign North Carolina Central defensive tackle John Drew Monday but instead added former Michigan State defensive lineman Anthony Rashad White.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, the Patriots had agreed to terms with Drew, a former Duke defender who was kicked off his first college team for being involved in a gun incident. However, the Patriots ultimately went a different route.

White tallied 65 tackles in three years as a Spartan. He was originally signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers at the end of April but was let go in mid-May.

The Patriots also inked another rookie defensive player Sunday in Illinois cornerback Justin Green.

The former high school track star Green injects a bit of speed into the Patriots' secondary for training camp, but he's facing an uphill battle, as is White, to make the final roster.
