Dolphins ink ex-Giant who injured Mark Sanchez

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Before getting cut by the New York Giants, Marvin Austin got his last shot in this preseason, delivering the hit that injured New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez's shoulder and ultimately gave rookie Geno Smith the job.

Maybe Smith is next.

The Miami Dolphins signed Austin, a former second round defensive tackle, Tuesday to help deepen a somewhat shorthanded defensive front. Defensive tackle Paul Soliai and defensive end Cameron Wake are both sidelined to injury.

Randy Starks is starting in place of Soliai, and rookie Dion Jordan has stepped up in Wake's absence, so Miami is working to fill out the second level of its depth chart.

Austin sat out his rookie season (2011) to injury and played in eight games last year.

If he clings to the Dolphins' roster until Dec. 1, he'll get a chance to give Smith a nice "you're welcome."
