Mario Williams on record-setting pace for sacks

BY NICK ST. DENIS

In 2001, New York Giants pass rusher Michael Strahan took the single-season NFL sack record from former New York Jets star defener Mark Gastineau. Strahan removed the title from the AFC East but kept it in the state.

In 2013, Mario Williams has a chance to bring the record back to the AFC East but keep it in the state yet again.

Williams, the Buffalo Bills' top pass rusher, is on pace to break Strahan's single-season sack record of 22.5.

Williams has 10 quarterback takedowns through seven games, which averages 1.43 per game. That number times 16 equals 22.88. We'll round up for 23.

If it isn't Williams, however, it could be someone else this year. Robert Mathis of the Indianapolis Colts leads the NFL with 11.5 sacks, and Kansas City Chiefs pass rusher Justin Houston is tied with Williams at 10.
