Patriots won't see old friend Zoltan this week

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Zoltan Mesko was pretty good as the New England Patriots' punter. Then, the Patriots owed him some money.

New England released Mesko last summer after employing the Romanian-born boot for three years, as rookie Ryan Allen, who competed with Mesko in camp for the gig, came with comparable talents and a much cheaper price tag.

Mesko, however, was scooped up by the Pittsburgh Steelers prior to the season. He was slated to face his former team this week, but those plans changed when the Steelers released him at the beginning of this week.

“The punting has been very similar to how it’s been the previous weeks and really how I kind of characterize it, he’s had his moments, positively and negatively,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said, via Steelers.com. “He’s been inconsistent and that’s not good enough."

So with that, the news is that there's no news, as Mesko won't get an opportunity to pin the Patriots deep in their own end. At least not yet.

Instead, the Patriots will be up against veteran Mat McBriar, who Pittsburgh brought in upon releasing Mesko.
