Escorted or not, Gaine out the Dolphins' door

BY NICK ST. DENIS

After not getting the Miami Dolphins' general manager job, Dolphins assistant GM Brian Gaine and the team have "mutually agreed to part ways."

Gaine was a finalist for the lead gig but lost out to former Tampa Bay Buccaneers executive Dennis Hickey. The team announced his departure Wednesday.

According to The Miami Herald's Adam Beasley, Gaine in fact never even discussed football matters with Hickey, as it was expected all along Gaine would be a goner.

"I want to thank Brian for his contributions to the Miami Dolphins," Hickey said, via MiamiDolphins.com. “We both agreed that this decision was in everyone’s best interests going forward.

"This will allow Brian to move forward in his professional pursuits and the Dolphins to move forward with our 2014 plan. I want to wish Brian the very best in the future."

Beasley also reported that Gaine was escorted out of the building, which the team disputed. Regardless, it's a moot point.

Gaine isn't expected to be unemployed for long.
