Despite record, Rex still has grip on locker room

BY NICK ST. DENIS

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan lost the season more than a month ago, and whether he's already lost his job remains to be see.

The locker room? It's still Rex's.

"I can't see myself playing for another coach,'' linebacker Demario Davis said this week, via Newsday. "Rex is a great defensive mind and just a great coach in general. Players love him. The only thing you can ask for out of a head coach is that he creates a system that everybody buys into and that people go out and play for him.

" . . I feel like he's built a foundation for a winning organization. Sometimes you just have to give it time to let it fall into place. You have to give it time to jell together. I'm as loyal to him as I am to my teammates, but even more so to him, just because I really believe in what he's doing.''

2014 marks the Jets' fourth straight non-winning season--putting Ryan's two AFC Championship berths when he first took the reins as coach a far and distant memory.

Jets players will again fight for Ryan's job the remainder of this season. They started their campaign, albeit maybe too late, two weeks ago with a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Davis echoed the sentiments of many players in the locker room who have Rex's back.

"... The reason we stayed together talks about his leadership, Davis said, "and it says a lot about him."
