Jets swiftly hire Howard's replacement in Giacomini

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The New York Jets wanted to lock up right tackle Austin Howard well before he could sniff free agency, but as time went on, it became clear he was destined for the marketplace.

Howard ended up signing on with the Oakland Raiders Tuesday (sorry, man), leaving a relatively crucial void on Gang Green's front.

The Jets swiftly filled that void, announcing Wednesday that they agreed to terms with former Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman Breno Giacomini.

RPT: Jets trying to re-up Howard before free agency

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Two years ago, the New York Jets couldn't get rid of their right tackle fast enough.

That's not the case right now.

According to Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News, the Jets have begun contract negotiations with Austin Howard, who is slated for free agency in March if he isn't re-signed in the coming weeks.

Right tackle Austin Howard signs tender with Jets

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The New York Jets are slowly working to solidify their offensive line and took another small step in doing so Monday.

Restricted free agent and incumbent starting right tackle Austin Howard signed his tender, according to Kimberley A. Martin of Newsday. The tender is of the second-level variety, worth $2.023 million. (photo: Pedro Camba, Flickr)

Howard wasn't spectacular in 2012, but he was an upgrade over Wayne Hunter, who failed to make a smooth transition into the starting role following the departure of Damien Woody.

Jets place second-round tender on Austin Howard

BY NICK ST. DENIS

New York Jets right tackle Austin Howard was an upgrade over Wayne Hunter last season, and for Jets, that's a start.

Gang Green placed a second-round tender on the restricted free agent, as reported Monday by Rich Cimini of ESPN New York.

The Jets set the bar at $2.02 million for a year and will have an opportunity to match an offer from another team if Howard draws interest. (photo: Pedro Cambra, Flickr)

Howard gets best of Williams, Williams blames refs

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Buffalo Bills defensive end Mario Williams didn't record a sack or a quarterback pressure on New York Jets signal-caller Mark Sanchez.

In fact, the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history was regularly handled by journeyman and former practice-squader right tackle Austin Howard. But it wasn't Williams' fault, according to Williams.

"Pass blocking doesn't consist of illegal hands to the face just about every play, which, when somebody tells you that, and you're five yards away from it, and you walk away like you don't see him telling you you're getting punched in the face every time, then that dictates somebody like myself having to take care of that on my own," Williams said after the Bills' 48-28 loss to the Jets, according to ESPN New York.

Williams went on to explain that he pointed out the issue to the refs but that the refs just ignored him.

"It's not something that's really going to dictate something, but what are you going to about it?" Williams went on. "You're getting off the ball and getting punched in the face, literally -- not by accident -- just about every other time, and that's a penalty, last time I checked, unless they changed it with the new CBA or something. Last time I checked, that's a penalty."

Being relieved of duties must be a relief for Hunter

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Change was coming at right tackle for the New York Jets. It just took way too long.

According to multiple media reports, Jets coach Rex Ryan announced Thursday that embattled offensive lineman Wayne Hunter was being demoted to a backup position in favor of Austin Howard, who now has the starting right tackle gig by default.

Early this offseason, Hunter referred to himself as the team's "weakest link" last season, and he appeared to be just that through two preseason games the last two weeks. He was consistently overwhelmed with the opposition's defensive rush and gave up a plethora of pressures on quarterback Mark Sanchez, a handful of them resulting in sacks.

Now, Hunter will assume the job he had in 2010: the team's swing tackle, who will be used in extra-protection and running-down situations -- something the Jets will use plenty of Week 1 against Mario Williams and the Buffalo Bills.

Hunter will make $2.5 million in guaranteed money this season. That, combined with the fact that the microscope has turned from him to the Jets' front office and coaches, has to be a relief.
