Right tackle Austin Howard signs tender with Jets

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The New York Jets are slowly working to solidify their offensive line and took another small step in doing so Monday.

Restricted free agent and incumbent starting right tackle Austin Howard signed his tender, according to Kimberley A. Martin of Newsday. The tender is of the second-level variety, worth $2.023 million. (photo: Pedro Camba, Flickr)

Howard wasn't spectacular in 2012, but he was an upgrade over Wayne Hunter, who failed to make a smooth transition into the starting role following the departure of Damien Woody.

Pro Football Focus had Howard graded highly last season as a run blocker but poorly in pass protection. According to PFF, Howard gave up 30 quarterback hurries, 10 hits and 10 sacks.
