Leon Washington was one of many bubble players trying to step forward, not backward, Thursday night.
The veteran return specialist stepped sideways.
Washington showed a flash of his old self in the New England Patriots' preseason finale, scampering for a 43-yard punt return that set up a touchdown against the New York Giants. It was the kind of play he became known for during his time with the New York Jets and Seattle Seahawks and the reason the Patriots brought him in this offseason.

Pats' contrasting RBs make comparing tough

It's no secret the New England Patriots are planning to use their plethora of talent at running back any way they can to score points, whether it be on the ground, in the air or on special teams.
But with a group of playmakers so specialized in one area or another, the real question may be who stays and who goes once the roster begins to thin.
"I think it's been very competitive," coach Bill Belichick told reporters Tuesday. "It's interesting, I think when you look at the players at that position – including the guys at fullback – each guy is a little bit different than the other ones. They have some individual, unique skills that are good and so do the other players. It's hard to make a comparison when we talk about it in our personnel meetings.

Washington won't get specific on role with Pats

Leon Washington won't disclose exactly what the New England Patriots plan to do with him.
Sounds like he's a true Patriot already.

Pats replace one small former Jet RB with another

The plug-and-play New England Patriots continue their assembling Thursday in hosting a pair of familiar faces.
According to Tim Graham of the Buffalo News, former Buffalo Bills receiver Donald Jones will pay a visit to Patriots headquarters.

Leon grasped '10 trade, knew Jets 'had guys to pay'

"Neon" Leon Washington was "Neon" before he actually wore neon.
Washington, now a Seattle Seahawk, was the New York Jets' most elusive player in the mid-2000s, returning four kickoffs for touchdowns after being drafted by Gang Green in 2006. He also set a franchise record for all-purpose yards in a season in 2008.
Being drafted in the same class as franchise linemen Nick Mangold and D'Brickashaw Ferguson, and just a year off of arguably the team's two best defensive players, Washington knew his time with the Jets was short due to finances.
