Pats' Haynesworth end 'doesn't surprise' Shanahan

By Nick St. Denis

The New England Patriots started the season with two former Washington Redskins on the defensive line in Andre Carter and Albert Haynesworth.

Carter is still a Patriot and leads the team in sacks. Haynesworth, who has been a problem everywhere he's been in the NFL, isn't.

"It doesn't surprise me," Redskins coach Mike Shanahan told the New England media Wednesday via conference call regarding Haynesworth's departure from New England. The Patriots released him in November.

Haynesworth signed a $100 million contract with the Redskins in 2009 but did nothing but cause problems and underachieve. Washington traded him to the Patriots before this season, but Haynesworth did very little for the Patriots, as well.

Carter, however, was released by the Redskins prior to this season because he didn't fit in their 3-4 defense. Shanahan was happy Carter landed on his feet. As for Haynesworth, he knew how that would turn out.

"You talk about Andre Carter who was the most accountable guy that you could be around -- he's a pro," Shanahan said. "Albert, it didn't take long to figure out that everybody buys into a system and it didn't take long to figure out that he wasn't buying in, so that was an easy decision."
