Bills receive compensatory picks for Searcy, Spiller
Offseason losses from last year have come full circle for the Buffalo Bills.
Following the departures of free agents Da'Norris Searcy and C.J. Spiller, the team received two compensatory picks Friday for their troubles.
According to BuffaloBills.com, Buffalo received fourth- and sixth-round picks (139th and 218th) for the pair, the first time the Bills have received a compensatory pick since 2012.
To date, the additions put the Bills at eight total picks for this season's draft, which takes place April 28 to 30.

Spiller on free agency: 'I will not be returning to Buffalo'
The news on the LeSean McCoy trade may not be official until next week, but it seems C.J. Spiller's departure is all but set in stone.
The Buffalo running back, who becomes a free agent March 10, was reportedly in talks with the Bills' front office about a potential contract extension. Those talks seem to now be over, as the sixth-year back spoke out Tuesday about his future.
"I will not be returning to Buffalo," Spiller said on the NFL Network, via buffalobills.com.

Jackson: Spiller return all about the numbers
With less than two weeks before the free agency period begins, C.J. Spiller has dollar signs on the brain. Problem is, they're not the same dollar signs on the minds of the Buffalo Bills front office.
The 27-year-old and the organization are currently not seeing eye to eye when it comes to a fair contract extension, a situation made a little clearer by Jason Fitzgerald's breakdown of the free agent running backs this season, via the Sporting News. He has Spiller listed as a "Tier 2" back, a designation that includes a number of other talented ball carriers and carries an average yearly salary of $3.5 million per year.
Given his age and prior success, Spiller likely sees himself as a Tier 1 player (or somewhere between the two), a designation that garners a much higher paycheck.
According to teammate and fellow back Fred Jackson, Spiller's return to Buffalo is contingent upon the two sides finding a happy middle ground.
"I talked to C.J. I talked to him earlier today," Jackson said. "He definitely wants to be back in Buffalo. It’s just going to be about getting the job done and getting the numbers worked out. I know there are going to be other teams interested in him.
"He’s a tremendous athlete and a tremendous running back. We’d all be foolish to sit here and think other teams aren’t going to come after him."

Spiller 'not going to stress' over offseason negotiations
After five seasons in the NFL, C.J. Spiller is two weeks away from being on the open market.
While the Buffalo Bills running back is in discussions with the team on a contract extension, that doesn't mean he hasn't been eyeing other opportunities. With a former coach now leading a divisional rival and a playoff run high on the wishlist, the 27-year-old will be mulling his options until the free agency period officially begins March 7.
But while Bills fans sit and gnaw their fingernails for the next 10 days, Spiller will be enjoying every minute.
"You’ve got to have patience, don’t get frustrated with the process and be confident in yourself. I’ve never doubted what I can do in the NFL and I never will."

Gailey in mind, Spiller sees 'perfect match' with Jets
C.J. Spiller thrived under Chan Gailey when Gailey was the head coach of the Buffalo Bills a few years back. And now that Gailey is back running an offense with the New York Jets, the soon-to-be free agent tailback is keeping the cross-division option open. Wide open.
Spiller told the NY Daily News this week that because of his familiarity with Gailey and his system, it would be "a perfect match."
"Who knows what can happen, but I’d be foolish not to have those guys on my list," he said. "I had my best years in the league with Chan. So it’d be dumb not to give it serious thought.”

Spiller: At 8-7, missing playoffs is 'a nightmare'

The Buffalo Bills were in the driver's seat.
At 8-6 and following a crucial home win against the playoff-bound Packers, the team held its fate in its hands going into Oakland to face the two-win Raiders.
The game quickly turned into your typical "trap" scenario, and the Bills were unable to erase an early deficit en route to their 15th consecutive year without a playoff berth.

Marrone confident in Spiller; roster move pending

It's been two months since C.J. Spiller has seen the field on Sunday.
Now four days from the Bills' Week 16 matchup against the Oakland Raiders, coach Doug Marrone is pretty confident the former Pro Bowler is ready to go.
"He looks good. I mean, he really does," Marrone told reporters Thursday, via buffalobills.com. "It's just a matter of waiting until the end of the week, make a move there. The only concern I have is just to make sure -- just from a standpoint of, it's not really being in shape but to be able to play and run plays, in and out, in and out -- that his conditioning is right at that level.

Marrone: Consistency of O-line has to get better

The Buffalo Bills' defensive line can't play much better than it has thus far.
The crew leads the league in sacks with 49 and has held opposing offenses to only 3.8 rushing yards per attempt and six total rushing touchdowns.
The offensive line, however, has seen its ups and downs.
"I think, obviously, we have to get better," coach Doug Marrone said Wednesday, via buffalobills.com. "There’s been times in games where there’s been spurts where you think, ‘Okay, here we go. We’ve finally got it going,’ but there’s been a setback, for whatever reasons.

Spiller 'like a kid in a candy store' back at practice

It's been almost two months since running back C.J. Spiller joined his teammates at practice. Wednesday, he was pretty excited about his return to the field.
"Just cutting, I haven’t done that in about a month and a half so just cutting, going out with the backs, holding the football again, putting the helmet back on, so it was like a little kid in a candy store today for me," Spiller said via buffalobills.com. "So, I thought today was a successful day for me."
It's been almost two months since running back C.J. Spiller joined his teammates at practice. Wednesday, he was pretty excited about his return to the field.

It was the first day the 27-year-old was technically permitted to return following his collarbone injury, and his level of participation should have the Bills optimistic that he's on track to return against the Raiders in Week 16.

Bills add Tanner to RB unit; Spiller put on IR-Return list

With word that both Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller are now officially out for a number of weeks following a pair of injuries in Week 7, the Buffalo Bills bolstered their thinning unit by signing running back Philip Tanner Tuesday.
Tanner, a former undrafted free agent, joins the Bills after a three-year stint in Dallas, where he saw 183 total snaps, according to ProFootballFocus. At 5-foot, 10-inches tall and 217 pounds, the 26-year-old out of Middle Tennessee State is the smallest back on the roster.
Tanner's averaged 2.7 yards per carry since he entered the league, though he had only nine carries all of last season while working as part of the Cowboys' practice squad.

Jackson confident in Dixon, Brown as Bills eye backups

Celebrations were abound at Ralph Wilson Stadium Sunday following the last-second touchdown that sealed the victory for Buffalo Bills. The hugs prior to halftime, however, were those of consolation.
The team's top two running backs, veteran Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller, left Sunday's game in sequential quarters, victims of groin and collar bone injuries, respectfully. While Jackson's prognosis seems positive -- he's projected to miss about a month -- Spiller's is a bit more bleak.
With a tough start to the season and now a chance he could end up on IR following reported surgery, the elder of the two tailbacks dealt with the situation the only way he could.

Marrone hasn't lost confidence in Spiller, run game

Things have literally not gone as planned for the Buffalo Bills run game this season.
The unit came into 2014 after a record-breaking year where it put up 144 yards per game on average and more than 2,300 yards on the ground in total. With the coaching staff coming into its second season, as well as some key additions in both the backfield and on the line, this year's ceiling seemed even higher.
Unfortunately, that hasn't happened.

Orton, Bills will need to commit to run against Detroit

Buffalo's starting quarterback may have changed, but the offensive gameplan will remain the same: Run the ball.
In his first press conference since his promotion, veteran Kyle Orton was asked a lot of personal questions about the move -- if he's rusty, how confident he feels with the playbook, even what he said to now-backup signal-caller E.J. Manuel following the announcement (check out his answer here).
When asked about how he plans to beat the league's No. 1 overall defense, however, his answer had little do with his upcoming performance and everything to do with the effectiveness of his running back corps.

Spiller on Bills' Clemson tandem: 'That's what we do'

The Buffalo Bills' elusive pair of Clemson products--C.J. Spiller and Sammy Watkins--made its presence felt in a 29-10 romp of the rival Miami Dolphins Sunday.
The veteran tailback Spiller ran back a kickoff return 102 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, and the rookie wideout Watkins added a score of his own on a 12-yard reception from EJ Manuel later in the stanza.
Watkins' score was set up by a 47-yard run by Spiller. Watkins had a coming-out party with 117 yards receiving on eight catches.

Dolphins expect 'run, run and more run' from Bills

The Miami Dolphins expect the two to again be a focal point when the teams face off Sunday in an AFC East bout.
“Run, run and more run,” defensive end Cameron Wake said this week, via MiamiDolphins.com. “This week may be a little different type of game, but at the end of the day you’ve got two tremendous football players, guys who can definitely when they get the ball in their hands eat up a lot of yards in one play."
The Buffalo Bills have boasted one of the more imposing one-two punches at tailback the past few years--when healthy--between the powerful Fred Jackson and speedy C.J. Spiller.

Marrone: Despite miscue, Jackson will still return punts

The Buffalo Bills running backs have taken on added roles on special teams this year, from C.J. Spiller returning kickoffs to Fred Jackson back lining up for punt returns.
Both were in action Sunday, with Spiller tallying a 29-yard return early in the first quarter and Jackson out for a punt with less than six minutes to go in the second. Jackson's opportunity didn't go as smoothly as Spiller's, however, as the veteran muffed the catch but ultimately recovered the ball.
According to coach Doug Marrone, Jackson's minor slip-up won't affect his future on the punt squad.

C.J. Spiller was a proven kick returner at Clemson, and he's shown he can be equally as successful at the pro level.
After finishing the preseason as the Bills' strongest man out of the end zone, it looks like he'll once again be displaying his elusive return skills on a full-time basis.
The team's depth chart lists the 27-year-old running back as the primary returner in front of sophomore wide receiver Marquise Goodwin. And while he didn't flat out confirm Wednesday that Spiller would be the team's leading man on special teams, coach Doug Marrone was more candid about his plans on Thursday.

Whaley: No teams have contacted Bills about Spiller

Tailback C.J. Spiller is entering a contract year.
But Fred Jackson, who just signed an extension with the Buffalo Bills, isn't. Neither is Anthony Dixon, who signed with the team this offseason. Bryce Brown, who the Bills recently traded for, is also inked beyond 2014.

Manuel noticeably improved in win over Panthers

If steady improvement is the name of the game, sophomore quarterback E.J. Manuel is accomplishing his goals this preseason. And his teammates are noticing.
Following a disappointing start to the summer where he went 2-for-7 for 19 yards and looked fairly predictable against the New York Giants, Manuel ratcheted things up against the Carolina Panthers Friday, going 9-for-13 for 96 yards and committing far fewer errors his second time around.
While the team's overall offensive woes in some pretty familiar areas still exist (red zone, third down), Manuel earned some praise from his offensive partners and proved he can make adjustments when needed.

Spiller still shopping for agent as crucial year nears

Coming into his fifth year in the league, Spiller will be looking to land another long-term deal with the team between now and the start of 2015, or he has the option to test the free agent market. He's currently in the top bracket of highest paid backs in the league, though injuries last season kept the 26-year-old from playing at top form.
Spiller told the Post-Standard recently that vetting a new agent is still ongoing.
